"The recreation component of the [Connolly Leatherworks] development is an 8 metre wide landscaped riverside walkway and cycleway along the west bank of the Wandle. Together, with the new bridge over the Wandle, this will form a link between Wandle Park and the Wandle Valley Nature Park." (Councillor Brian White, Merton Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, 6th December 2000)
As you can see, it doesn't.
The Wandle Trail leaflet shows it as becoming a proposed part of the trail, with a planned construction date of 2005.
Control of Merton Council passed from Labour to Conservative at the local elections of 4th May 2006.
The bridge was eventually built by George Wimpey in 2007 (?) as part of its "Section 106" obligations for the development.
It is understood that Merton Council has not adopted the completed footpath to South Road from the west side of the bridge as a Public Right of Way.
George Wimpey was pestered for three months starting November 2008 before its representative agreed to arrange a meeting on site with council employees, a local councillor and potential bridge users. Important documentation was brought to this meeting by the representative.
A Freedom of Information Request has been sent to Merton Council for documentation relating to this bridge.
